Is Bipolar Disorder Getting In The Way Of Your Best Life?

  • Do you experience frequent, sudden mood changes that seem to come out of nowhere?
  • Are periods of intense depression and self-loathing often followed by periods of intense urges, agitation, and grandiosity?
  • Is it hard for you to maintain healthy relationships or hold down a steady job?

Maybe you’re characterized by risky or hypersexual behaviors that are difficult to control. Perhaps you feel so wired and energized at times that you struggle to relax, concentrate, or sleep at night. In the past, you may have been to clinician after clinician without getting any relief.

Deep down, however, there’s a part of you that knows how resilient you are…and that relief is not a fleeting hope, but a very real possibility.

We’re here to help you connect with that part.

Evidence-based therapy for Bipolar I and II. Harmony Harbor supports mood regulation, insight, and long-term stability.

When many people think of bipolar disorder, they think of manic highs and feelings of euphoria. And while that can certainly be part of the disorder, the truth is that the hardest part is usually the depression.

Some days, you may feel so lethargic and unmotivated that you can’t even get out of bed—completing even the simplest of tasks feels like climbing a mountain. These depressive episodes could last for months at a time, disrupting work, relationships, and basically every area of your life.

The good news is that here at Harmony Harbor, we specialize in empowering people with bipolar disorder to find relief and renewal through our trauma-informed, evidence-based approaches to therapy. Stabilization and management are both key and doable—we have experience helping kids, teens, and adults get the support they need.

What is Bipolar Disorder?

In spite of how common bipolar disorder is, it’s one of the most widely misunderstood mental health disorders. People often say they are bipolar because their mood changes frequently, but that’s not what bipolar means. Bipolar disorder has distinct periods of depression and mania, with mania occurring less frequently and for shorter periods of time than depression.

There are many different factors that can lead to bipolar disorder, including genetics, trauma, grief and loss, chronic stress, and substance abuse. There are also multiple kinds of bipolar:

  • Bipolar 1 is characterized by distinct periods of extreme highs and lows
  • Bipolar 2 can have episodes of depression like in Bipolar 1, but tends to have more chronic depression and hypomania, which is a less severe form of mania typically characterized by irritability.
  • “Mixed episode” is another form of bipolar where people experience depression while also feeling symptoms of mania like insomnia, racing thoughts, a sense of urgency, and irritability.

The right therapist can help you discern which kind of bipolar disorder most closely aligns with your struggles.

Bipolar Isn’t Just Misunderstood—It’s Also Misdiagnosed

Identifying bipolar disorder accurately is crucial to getting proper treatment. After all, bipolar is often mistaken for medical conditions or misdiagnosed as ADHD, Borderline Personality Disorder, or Unipolar Depression. In fact, adolescents and young adults who have bipolar disorder often get written off as “rebellious teenagers” or “not living up to their full potential.” No one chooses to suffer from bipolar, and often those with bipolar have experienced a myriad of inaccurate diagnoses making recovery more challenging.

What’s more, many people with bipolar disorder may not consider their manic episodes as problematic—they may view them as natural periods of relief from depression, believing this is how other people must feel when they’re not depressed. So there’s often a reluctance on the part of sufferers to reach out for help in a manic phase.

Early screening is essential, as the average person with bipolar disorder doesn’t get diagnosed until ten years after the first onset of symptoms. What’s more, bipolar is also the sixth leading cause of disability worldwide.

At Harmony Harbor, we offer diagnostic services in addition to counseling so that you can gain clarity about your challenges and receive tailored support for managing your unique experience with bipolar.

A Fulfilling Life is Possible — Even With Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder may be a lifelong condition, but with the right support, it does not have to define or control your life. Effective therapy can help you understand your patterns, manage symptoms, and build a life that feels not only manageable, but meaningful and fulfilling.

At Harmony Harbor, we believe everyone deserves to experience a sense of stability, purpose, and connection. Receiving an accurate diagnosis, feeling supported within a compassionate community, and working with clinicians who are both deeply caring and highly skilled can be life-changing. These elements—when thoughtfully integrated—make all the difference.

Our comprehensive approach can help you, your child, or your teen navigate the challenges of managing bipolar disorder. Starting at the intake process, we’ll provide diagnostic testing to help screen for alternative diagnoses and rule out other conditions that can look like bipolar such as BPD or complex PTSD.

Additionally, we’ll collaborate with physicians, psychiatrists, or nurse practitioners to support you as you learn about medication options. Most importantly, our therapists are not passive observers—we’re active and engaged clinicians who will give you a safe and empowering space to work through your challenges at a pace that’s right for you.

Tailoring Our Approach To Bipolar Disorder Treatment

The foundation of our practice is rooted in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), a science-backed approach that has been shown to help people with bipolar disorder:

  • Reduce depressive and manic symptoms
  • Lower suicidal ideation
  • Decrease hospitalizations
  • Increase mindfulness
  • Improve emotional regulation
  • Bolster their interpersonal relationships

Backed with substantial research including randomized controlled studies (RTCs), DBT programs provide vital coping skills, individual therapy, family support, and phone coaching so that people can maintain and improve their life without requiring hospitalization. Our foundational approach is to always strive to give you the best chance of maintaining stability in your life.  We do this by ensuring we properly diagnose bipolar disorder and address the full picture, including both depression and manic symptoms in treatment.

In addition to Dialectical Behavior Therapy, our practice is proud to offer an array of diverse approaches, including:

Trauma-informed therapy for Bipolar Disorder. Harmony Harbor offers supportive care grounded in safety and consistency.

You May Have Some Questions About Bipolar Disorder Therapy…

Then you’re in the right place! We specialize in helping people get an accurate diagnosis, and we walk all our clients through a thorough intake process of history-taking and information-gathering that provides clarity and certainty.

Understanding your condition on a deeper level makes it easier to manage your symptoms and access helpful resources.

On one hand, bipolar disorder is usually lifelong; on the other, that doesn’t mean your life will be dreadful. Through the use of evidence-based approaches like DBT, stabilizing and managing bipolar is possible. Having trusting and compassionate support from knowledgeable providers who are equipped to treat this condition makes a notable difference. Your condition itself may not go away, but your symptoms can improve and you can experience a life of balance and purpose.

We view child or teen therapy as a family need and include parents and guardians as part of treatment. For children under age 15, we meet with the parents alone first, but the majority of the time your child will meet with their therapist one-on-one. We aim to include you as needed, and especially when we focus on coping strategies, which we believe will help you too in managing your child’s bipolar disorder outside of therapy. Oftentimes, we also collaborate with psychiatrists and schools, ensuring your child gets the most well-rounded care possible.

Bipolar Disorder Does Not Define You

Nor does it have to hold you back from living a steady and fulfilling life. It’s time to connect with your inner resilience and take that courageous step of reaching out for support. Together, let’s build a future that reconnects you with hope.
